but it seems increasingly elusive. the opportunity to find the fleeting fame that Andy Warhol predicted. The dictionary defines "snippet" as "a small bit, scrap, or fragment". We are proposing that the entire world participate in the writing of
the next great novel by submitting "snippets" of an unwritten
story in 140 character increments. This novel has been started by TheWorldWritesABook.com
with the first entry which reads: From that point on, it will be up to the world's writers (i.e., anyone who wants to flex their proverbial creative muscles) to move the story along on its developing path. Each day, any person with internet access may suggest the next story snippet for that day. TheWorldWritesABook.com will review the entries on a daily basis and make a decision on which snippet should be added to the ongoing and unfolding prose. We may decide to add one or more snippets each day from the daily entries. The latest accepted entry (or entries), along with the updated, but incomplete, story will be posted on TheWorldWritesABook.com each Saturday.
Everyone who participates in this evolving project will have the opportunity to affect the plot, setting, storyline, dialogue, character development, style, theme, and every other aspect of the story, but only with 140 characters at a time. No one, including TheWorldWritesABook.com, will know the direction of the story until it unfolds everyday. For example, if you believe that a new character should be introduced at a certain point, mention your proposed character in your snippet for that day, and, if accepted, it may turn the story in a whole new direction. Or you may decide that a character should fall in love, or die a grisly death. Suggest that story direction in your snippet, and if your snippet is accepted, the plot will make that turn. At some point, the story will hopefully move to a compelling conclusion, and we will rely upon all of you to make the ending memorable. Afterwards, we will ask all of you to suggest an appropriate title for the finished work. Once the novel is complete, and if TheWorldWritesABook.com is able to have the story published, each person who contributed an accepted entry will be recognized in the book as a contributor. Even better, the individual who submitted the highest number of accepted entries will be awarded a Grand Prize of up to $25,000 (depending upon the terms of the publishing contract with a third party, if any.)
It costs nothing to contribute snippets, and you may submit as many different snippets as you wish each day on Twitter or through this website (although duplicate snippets will be disregarded). You know that a picture is worth a thousand words, but the question you must ask yourself is, "How many snippets is a book worth?" Ultimately, this novel may be written by many thousands of people who don't know each other, but who will share in the knowledge that they participated in the greatest literary achievement in world history! |
